As a clean beauty advocate, I can’t stress enough how much this matters. The chemical industry has been essentially unchecked – especially when it comes to personal care products and cosmetics.
Did you realize that this is a $62 Billion industry?
When I think of the anti-aging, serums, hair products, make up brands, perfumes, etc. that have emerged just during my lifetime (49 years). It’s mind blowing. First there were hair salons, then nail salons, then tanning salons, then waxing salons, then eyelash extension salons, then blow dry salons. As a woman, it would take several days to hit them all if I had back to back appointments.
No one ever stopped to think – is this safe? Why would we? I mean – we are one of the most regulated countries in the world, right?
All this has emerged in the past 50 years, but here’s the kicker. We have not passed any sort of major federal law governing this industry since….drumroll please…1938!
That’s crazy. We’re talking back when the Golden Gate Bridge was built! Think…
And, given the fact that we have introduced over 85,000 chemicals into commerce (with less than 10% having ever been tested for human safety). Yep. The European Union has banned or restricted the use of over 1400 ingredients that are known to be harmful while here in the U.S., we have only restricted 30.
This month, I am part of a campaign for change. Beautycounter is going to Washington to advocate for more protective health laws. We all deserve better.
You can get involved by texting #BetterBeauty to 52886. Urge Congress to step up on this issue.
You can also join our social media campaign and raise awareness by wearing the Beautycounter Red Lip Sheer & posting a photo of yourself with the hashtag #ThisTimeItsPersonal.
