Time to come out of our winter hibernation. To kick into Daylight Saving – to start to see the first signs of spring. And, to lighten up!
It’s actually very natural that we tend to gain weight during the winter. Nature set it up that way. A little extra weight was supposed to protect us from the cold and the fact that we wouldn’t have access to all of the typical summer and fall harvest foods.
Of course, in modern times, we have access to heated houses and cars. We have access to all kinds of foods year round. So, that extra weight in the winter is not really necessary for our survival.
A common mistake people make is going on a last minute diet to try to drop a few pounds before summer vacation. Or to sign up for a new and extreme workout regimen in an attempt to burn off what we put on during the winter months.
The problem with this approach is that our bodies are also setup to keep the status quo – homeostasis. Your body has a set point it moves toward to keep things working within your environment. And, while you can force weight down – it will inevitably work hard against you to move back up to where it was.
A better approach – a more effective approach – is to start now with a few small tweaks that can be sustained. New habits that will transform your daily routine. Forever.
That’s one of the benefits of working with a nutrition coach like me. You learn how to craft a way of eating that works for you and that adjusts with you over time – so you never have those extra pounds to lose. And, your weight no longer fluctuates, but instead always gravitates naturally to your absolute ideal. Without dieting or restriction.
My clients are often amazed to learn how it’s not always about the quantity of food you eat, but rather the quality of what you eat. And, sometimes it’s even the timing of what you eat. When you eat matters just as much as what.
And, also interesting to note is that you can eat the ‘perfect diet’, but if your hormones are off due to something in your mindset or your environment – you’re not going to reach your goal…no matter how ‘perfect’ you eat or exercise.
It’s complicated. But, it’s also easy. And, it’s one of my favorite things about coaching – helping people connect the dots and discover a way to lose weight that doesn’t require ‘eating a certain way’ or ‘exercising a certain way’. Instead, it’s just about taking the things you love – your daily habits – and making some minor adjustments and tweaks until you find that magic place you’ve been looking for.
I’m super excited to introduce the Summer Countdown program. I’m doing this together with my daughter, Tyler Smith, who is a certified personal trainer and holistic health coach. It’s going to be SO much fun to do to this program together.
