If you’re cleaning up your food, exercising as much as you can, and then slathering products like shampoo & lotion on your body every day – you’re doing it wrong.
I know – sorry. Kind of harsh. But it’s the truth.
Think of all of the things we do as women to make ourselves look better, smell better, feel better. Hair, nails, skin, eyelashes, makeup…the list goes on. And, the more things start to ‘fall down’, the more products we add to the mix.
Here’s the problem…
An entire industry is dedicated to solving these problems for us…promising anti-aging, plumping, lifting, tightening, smoother, softer…you name it.
For years, I pretty much did nothing for my skin. A bar of Dove soap was my go to. I couldn’t justify spending the money on my own skincare when my teenage girls were struggling with acne. So, all my disposable ‘skincare spending’ went to their treatments & products.
When they got out on their own, I decided it was time for me. Time to get some serious stuff going!
As a nutrition coach, I knew the importance of my diet & nutrition for healthy skin. The value of clean water & lots of rest to make my skin glow.
Here’s what I didn’t know….
- The amount of time it takes for something to be absorbed through our skin into our bloodstream? 26 seconds!!
- Harmful chemicals (we’re talking phalates, parabens, endocrine disruptors, cancer causing, nasty stuff) are allowed in the products we use every day
- Skincare & cosmetics are among the least regulated products in the market
- We haven’t passed a major federal law governing this industry since 1938!
This almost sounds too crazy to be true, right? But, unfortunately, it’s not. And it’s SO important for us to learn a little & pay attention to this so we don’t undermine our own efforts to get healthy.
Our skin is our largest organ & yet, we rarely stop to think about what we are putting on our skin on a daily basis. For most of us, it’s 8-12 different products (and several hundred different chemicals). Soap, moisturizer, sunscreen, shampoo, conditioner, styling products, makeup…the list goes on.
If you’re like me, you never stopped to consider the safety of these products. Maybe you’ve assumed that if they are on the shelf, they must be safe.
That’s certainly what I thought.
When I learned that the E.U. has spent the past two decades banning or restricting over 1,400 harmful or questionable ingredients from their personal care products and that the U.S. only bans or restricts 30? I was blown away.
There are about 10,000 chemicals commonly found in personal care products and only 10% of those chemicals have any safety data.
But here’s the thing – the United States has not passed a federal law to regulate the ingredients used in personal care products since 1938.
(Think about that for a minute. How much has changed in our world since 1938?)
I had to get involved and do something about this.
It’s time for a change.
If you are like me and you want to be confident that the products you use everyday are safe, but you also want products that are high performing and work. You want results! You want to feel beautiful!
The good news is that there are companies out there now that are working toward that end. And, this is why I’ve partnered with Beautycounter – to provide solutions & to raise awareness about this important topic.
Beautycounter has banned more than 1,500 ingredients setting a new health and safety standard—all while ensuring their products perform, and that they’re as indulgent as any luxury shampoo, lipstick or oil in the market.
Some of us having fun making our own homemade concoctions, but some of us aren’t going to go make our own shampoos and soaps and makeup. If you’re like me, you’re busy working & doing your thing & barely have enough time to cook dinner, let alone to make your own makeup. 🙂
When you finally get a little time to yourself….you want to treat yourself well! To pamper yourself a bit. Right? We deserve it!
We ALL deserve better.
This quick 3-minute video sums it up nicely.
