Nice to Meet You!
Hi, I’m Karen Friend Smith — health educator, entrepreneur & wellness advocate.
I am also a writer.
One of my favorite quotes is by Ingrid Bengis…
For me, words are a form of action, capable of influencing change.
I love taking an idea and bringing it to life – which is why I’m a serial entrepreneur. A problem solver. A tool maker. A service provider.
I wear a lot of hats and have several business pages I can point you to for my services, but this page here…is my place.
Which means, here at Karen’s Counter I will be dishing out thoughts about food, nutrition, self-care, consumerism, environment, advocacy, agriculture, industry, community, minimalism, aging, marriage, family, business and reinvention.
To raise awareness. To inspire action. To encourage progress. And, sometimes just for the selfish reason of getting it off my chest.
I have spent the last 10 years of my life working on my own health – learning about food & nutrition, taking courses, reading books, watching films, and basically obsessing over not only the theory of good health, but the implementation of the things I have learned.
The more I learned, the more I felt compelled to help others. This led to becoming a health educator and nutrition consultant. I spent years creating programs and tools to help others who are on a similar path to better health – for ourselves, our families and our planet.
Once I understood the importance of the chemicals we unknowingly put IN our bodies, I began to understand the importance of the chemicals we unknowingly put ON our bodies. This led to a whole new world for me as I started to learn about what’s going on in the personal care industry and the harmful chemicals that are allowed in the products we use every day.
This, of course, sparked a passion for advocacy and education – to ensure safer products and transparency for consumers who are trying to make healthier choices for themselves and their families.
I am incredibly passionate about big ideas, but I’m equally committed to the power of small actions — little things we can do in our daily lives that have a huge impact on the world around us.
Whether that’s what we choose to eat, where we choose to shop or how we choose to engage in the world — every word, every action moves us either forward or backward.
It all matters.
